Interior design: What is an interior design project?
What to expect when you hire an interior design professional.
We have been working in the interior design sector in Murcia for many years now. Despite the popularity gained by interior design, the public still doesn’t know exactly what an interior designer is or what an interior design project involves. When people come to our interior design studio in Murcia, they are looking for help to achieve the ideal space they want. They know they need professional interior design advice, but they are not sure exactly what we can offer them or how that help will take shape.
The first thing to clarify is that not all the services we offer at Keinzo Interiores are limited to the interior design project. On many occasions, clients ask our interior design studio for a certain type of one-off service. This can be as varied as help with selecting new furniture, advice on choosing materials or coming up with lighting ideas. With this type of decoration or consulting service, it is very common to help the client overcome obstacles in an interior design project they are carrying out themselves.
By contrast, an interior design project is a far more complex service that goes well beyond simple one-off assistance with designing a home.
It is often thought that an interior designer is simply someone with good taste who applies it to decorating a home. Nothing could be further from the truth; an interior design professional is someone who, in addition to that aesthetic sensibility, must also possess two further qualities: technical knowledge and a strong human touch.
In my view, these three factors are what create the ideal interior design professional; if just one of the three is missing, the work carried out will not be optimal. If we add a fourth to those three, experience in the interior design sector, then quality work is guaranteed.
So, what is an interior design project? What documents should it contain?
We understand an interior design project to be the creation of a document aimed at the creation or remodelling of a space with a specific objective and which contains all the technical and visual information needed to carry it out. This, which sounds very simple at first, is actually quite complex, and many things need to be taken into account if we want quality results. Gathering information from the client, exploring their tastes, needs and budget, creating the concept and developing it through floor plans, elevations and visualisations are just some of the things involved in carrying out an interior design project.
In addition, interior designers will design or review installations, electrics, plumbing, A/C, as well as lighting, a fundamental part of achieving a good result. Materials, flooring and tiling, the colour palette to be applied, as well as textiles and any other decorative element that helps create the chosen atmosphere, will be chosen. A budget and an estimated execution time will also be set, since without a fixed budget and good planning, carrying out the project can become a nightmare for the client.
This final document, which brings together all this information, is called the Project. If it is well written and complete, the client could, in theory, carry out the building work on their own by commissioning a construction company.
As you can see, an interior design project is about designing and planning all the variables that influence the creation and interior design of the space we are after. It is about setting an objective and documenting, through plans, photos and visualisations, the path to be followed for its execution.
The greater the detail and the better explained the interior design project is, the easier and more understandable it will be for the professionals involved in the work that follows. The client is the first person who needs to understand and approve the project, but it must also be understood by the many trades that will be involved afterwards in carrying it out.
The interior designer must carry out meticulous, detailed work, in which everything must be explained with total clarity to avoid future mistakes. Hence the importance of hiring the best interior design professionals. Not only will they carry it out, but they will also guide you to achieve the results you long await for your future space.
